Cooking Oils

Vegetable oil and tallow are often used as both an energy source in pig diets and as a means of
suppressing dust levels in the feed. Sometimes the oil and tallow used is recycled product from deep
fryers located in restaurants and food industry outlets. With the increasing demand for traceability
and quality assurance in food supply chains it is important that farmers obtain their recycled cooking
oils from reliable sources.
Definition
Recycled cooking oil is defined as the used oil collected from deep fryers that is filtered and
collected in clean containers. It must not be contaminated with detergents, other liquids or
solid material. Recycled cooking oil does not include the scrapings from hot plates and other cooking utensils such as saucepans and frypans.
